Promotion of Patuá and the Macanese culture to young people

On the 1st of March, a session dedicated to Patuá was held, jointly promoted by the Association “Language Exchange and Culture Promotion” (LECPA) and the Associação dos Jovens Macaenses (AJM).
“Patuá: And now, how?” was the first activity of 2023 carried out by the two associations, after the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, and featured the presentation by Paula Carion, vice-president of the board of AJM and member of Dóci Papiacám di Macau, group theater that celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
The session in Cantonese and Patuá, aimed specifically at the vast young audience of Macau, with the presence of the Chinese, Portuguese and Macanese communities, was intended to spread knowledge of the Portuguese Creole of Macau at risk of extinction, decreed by UNESCO. In the form of interaction with the audience, simple words from Patuá with influences in Cantonese, Portuguese, Malay and even English were shared with the participants, as well as the need to preserve this creole or dialect, which is promoted every year in a theater play by the Dóci Papiaçám di Macau group, part of the intangible heritage of Macau and the People’s Republic of China, as well as Macanese cuisine.
Un Wa Lok, president of LECPA, indicated that the event was organized in connection with the International Mother Language Day and where UNESCO recognizes the importance of multilingualism for society, along with the knowledge of multiculturalism. Through this event, it was possible for the two associations involved to work together to promote Patuá to the public.
At the end of the session, editions of the International Institute of Macau on the subject were distributed to participants.
The session, held at the International Institute of Macau and with the support of the theater group Dóci Papiaçám di Macau, was also attended by the president of AJM, António Monteiro and Miguel de Senna Fernandes, playwright and director of Dóci Papiaçám di Macau, where the participants still had time for a gathering, along with Macanese snacks.
